Man falls 15 metres into incinerator collection point

By Lau Joon-Nie/Lip Kwok Wai, Channel NewsAsia Posted: 19 June 2008 2308 hrs
SINGAPORE: A waste collector miraculously escaped serious injury after falling into a rubbish collection area piled with refuse several stories high. The man, in his mid-40's, was emptying rubbish at the Tuas South Incineration Plant when he fell 15 metres into the collection point on Thursday. Fortunately, his fall was cushioned by the rubbish pile. A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ambulance arrived just before 4pm and its crew had to be lowered into the area using the incinerator's auxiliary hoist. The man was conscious when rescued. He was sent to the National University Hospital where he was treated for a fractured left leg. - CNA/ir

Comments in response to Yong Min's book review : Charlotte's Web
This book talks about an animal fable which deals with several important aspects of a happy life: friendship, heroism, con stancy, and death. I agree with you that Wilbur has a kind heart. However, he does not have a mind on his own. Charlotte on the other hand is kind and has patience. From the review you have written, I think i will like to read that book.

Mercy Relief raises S$163,000 for China quake victims
By Gamar Abdul Aziz, Channel NewsAsia
Date: 2 jun 2008

SINGAPORE: Due to the overwhelming requests from social and corporate groups, Mercy Relief has extended its fundraising permit until June 15. The revised permit number provided by the Commissioner of Charities is 0015/2008 (II). It said the total donation collected for the quake victims in China has now reached S$719,000. This includes the S$163,101.66 raised by 650 volunteers, during the one-day island-wide street collection on May 23. This is according to CERTIS Cisco, which provided the security and processed the counting and administration of the donations collected. CERTIS Cisco had underwritten the cost of cash processing for the street collection. In addition, CERTIS Cisco will also waive the charges for the next cash processing of the donations from collection boxes placed at SingPost, Shell, Toys ‘R’ Us, Kopi Tiam and other corporate organisations. 50 staff from corporate group KPMG also took to the streets, armed with donation cans and raised more than S$25,000 in over four hours. 200 of the volunteers that day were Chinese nationals working and studying in Singapore. Mercy Relief said its response team has personally distributed relief supplies - including food, water, medicines and tents - worth over S$400,000 since May 16. The items were carried on trucks, which had to travel through rough terrains which, at times, needed to be cleared manually. Mercy Relief said supplies were distributed at several counties in four prefectures - namely Aba, Mianyang, Deyang and Chengdu. Large 30 square-metre system tents have also been erected as a temporary school in Wenchuan, the epicentre of the quake. Mercy Relief is working with the local Disaster Management Centres, the Sichuan Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (SFPA) and the Chengdu Poverty Alleviation Bureau (CPAB). - CNA/vm

George's Marvellous Medicine

This book is called" George's Marvellous Medicine", written by Roald Dahl.
The story is about-Young George mixes a medicine to make his nasty grandmother more likeable, and once she drinks it she grows to immense proportions. George's father wants the formula to breed a race of super-size livestock, but George can't duplicate the recipe. His fourth try is a potion that shrinks the drinker to nothing – and greedy Grandma drinks it with unexpected results!

Character study

George- He is a clever boy.

Grandma- She is not a very nice person. She thinks that caterpillars and slugs are delicious and likes to crunch on beetles best of all.

Phrase

"Be kind and nice to people"
From this phrase, I have learnt that if we are nasty to people and become a nuisance to them, they will not like you, like the grandma in this story.

Charlie and the Chocolate

This book is called “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, written by Roald Dahl. The characters in the story are- Augustus, Veruca, Violet, Mike and Charlie. The story is about a small boy named Charlie, who lives with his four grandparents and his parents in a small wooden house on the edge of a great town. The family is very poor and the breadwinner in the family is only Charlie’s father, who worked in a toothpaste factory, screwing the tubes of the toothpaste. He was never paid enough to support the family even for a day’s meal, so the family is always starving. Charlie loves eating chocolates, but he can only get one bar of chocolate every year on his birthday, so he treasured it a lot. That year, there was a search on five golden tickets to be won to get a chance of going into the chocolate factory and have a lasting supple of chocolates and sweets for the rest of their lives. These five golden tickets have been printed on golden paper and hidden underneath the ordinary bars of chocolates, and they can be found in any shops in the world selling this brand of chocolates. Of course, the search is going on every second in the world and within four days, four tickets were found. The next day, while Charlie was walking to school, he saw a piece of fifty pence note lying on the ground. He picked it up and when to buy two bars of chocolates to eat. When he opened the second bar of chocolate, he saw something shiny in it. That’s how small Charlie’s adventure started into an amazing world of wonders……

Character Study

Charlie Bucket- He is kind-hearted. He does not want to take his parents share of food, even when he is starving.

Mr Willy Wonka- He is a very mysterious man.

Phrase

"Don't be too proud when you are rich"
From this phrase, I learnt that even though you are rich, there is nothing to be proud of.

Yeah!! The school hoildays are finally here!! This few days, I've been trying to clear all my homework so that I will have lots of time to play and hang out with friends. This morning, I went to Outram MRT Station for C.I.P, to help raise fund for Xin Yuan Community Care via flag day collection. It was a tiring job as many people would simply ignore you and walk away, while some would say they din't bring any money out!! Funny!! That was a very bad excuse.... How could someone go out without bringing any money?? Anyway, we had some fun too! Some of the people were very generous and gave $10, while others who were rushing gave 10 cents, and even 5 cents!! But whatever it is, it is still the heart that counts.... At the end of it, my can was very very heavy with all the coins that i had to put it on the floor... haha....
